St Mary's Church Haverfordwest

Marys Unite

When we called for "Marys of the World Unite" we wrote to Cunard, Southampton, who had recently launched Queen Mary 2.  By coincidence, a distinguished captain of the Cunard Line, Captain John Treasure Jones, was a Haverfordwest boy.  He was born here on 18th August 1905, educated in the Grammar School and married a Haverfordwest lady in St Mary's Church on 31st August 1933.  He was the last Captain of the first Queen Mary.  We had hoped that this special link with the Church and a Mary would be recognised by a contribution enabling QM2 to appear in the list of Marys.  Sadly that was not to be as Cunard only had a limited budget for charitable donations.

We need a Million Marys!

Are you called Mary? Do you know someone called Mary? If so you can help us...

Mary ! You will see that the Donation List includes the name Mary.  Between them they have contributed over £600 to the Appeal. Many have, or had, no connection with St Mary's but wished to be connected with their namesake. It is never too late to add your MARY to the Donation List.

If you are called Mary, simply send us a photo of yourself, a poem you have written or some artwork you have done along with a donation of your choice. If you know someone called Mary, make them famous by sending us a description of them or a photo of you with them along with a donation of your choice (even a pound coin taped to some cardboard would be great) to:-

St Mary's Restoration Appeal
Dreenhill Farm,
Dale Road,
Haverfordwest,
SA62 3XG.

We will put all poems, photos and artwork received up on this website.  You need to include a donation with your submission for us to include it.

Don't let a beautiful piece of history disappear, become a link in the chain of a million Marys around the World!

If you wish the Church to recover the tax you have paid, please write to the above address.

MARYS OF THE WORLD UNITE!

Marys of the world unite
And spare our church a widow's mite
A coin of modest denomination
Towards St Mary's restoration
We need a million altogether
To halt the toll of wind and weather
The money from a million Marys
Would save a Church which antiquaries
decree is one of Wales' TopTen
and put it in good heart again
MARYS OF THE WORLD UNITE!
TO SAVE ST MARYS, HAVERFORDWEST

MARY

I've always loved my given name
I'm proud of being Welsh too!
So I'm glad to help in some small way
With a donation to help you

What better name in all the world
Than the mother of our Lord

Please, other Marys think of that
Lets hope it strikes a chord

I wish you luck - with Marys all
And hope they too will give
Around the world, a few coins each
So that our name will live!

Mary Carless, Dwrbach, Fishguard

We deeply regret that Mary passed away on 19th August 2005 after a long illness.  Her family gave a generous donation to the Restoration Appeal.
